The holiday season of Christmas is upon us once again. I want to share a little different scriptural view of our Lord Jesus’ birth. There are actually several vantage points I want to share although we rarely give them the scriptural reflection they deserve.

The writer to the Hebrew Christians starts with the bringing forth of Jesus from His eternal existence with the Father. “In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe…And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, “Let all God’s angels worship him”(Hebrews 1:2, 6 NIV).

Before Jesus came as the virgin Mary’s son He was declared “My Son” by Father God. “For to which of the angels did God ever say, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father”?  Or again, “I will his Father, and he will be my Son”?(Hebrews 1:5 NIV).   What was decreed in the eternal realm between the Father and the Son was brought forth in the realm of time by the Holy Spirit.

Many scholars agree that the personification of “Wisdom” in Proverbs 8 is an allusion of Jesus Christ, Who “has been made to us Wisdom”(See 1 Co. 1:30). ““The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works, before his deeds of old; I was formed long ages ago, at the very beginning, when the world came to be. When there were no watery depths, I was given birth, when there were no springs overflowing with water; I was there when he set the heavens in place, when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep, when he established the clouds above and fixed securely the fountains of the deep, Then I was constantly at his side. I was filled with delight day after day, rejoicing always in his presence, rejoicing in his whole world and delighting in mankind”(Proverbs 8:22-24, 27, 28, 30, 31 NIV).   We recall that Job was asked by God, ” ‘Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation? Tell me, if you understand. Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know! Who stretched a measuring line across it? On what were its footings set, or who laid its cornerstone— while the morning stars sang together and all the angels shouted for joy?”(Job 38:4-7 NIV).  Before there was the Song of Redemption for the Son there was the Song of Creation for the Son.

The apostle John outlived his other fellow apostles by about sixty years. He wrote his gospel starting with a poem of Jesus, the Living Word.  He wrote,”In the beginning WAS the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He WAS in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being”[Caps. Mine](John 1:1-3 NASB).  Jesus’ BEGINNING was before there was “In the beginning”(Genesis 1:1).

Worship is due Jesus our King , at this Season we celebrate. It is His by right, predicated on the fact that in Jesus the Messiah, our God became our Savior. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace”(Isaiah 9:6 NIV).

Let us join with the myriad of angels in their song to our Creator. Let us also invite all the Nations to “Come worship and bow down before the Lord, our Maker.”

We,as believers, have learned to sing of the mystery of the virgin birth of our Savior. As the great Hymn writer, Isaac Watts put it :      “Veiled in flesh, the Godhead see…Hail Incarnate Deity!”
